Due to the lack of rain prior to Canada Day, the water level of the Nith River was too low for us to hold our traditional duck race this year. We checked the river the evening before the race, and it was clear there wouldn't be enough of a flow for the race to go ahead.
Instead of racing the ducks in the river, we decided to hold a ticket draw to determine the prize winners. This was announced in Scott Park throughout the day and also as we continued to sell tickets. The New Hamburg Lions generously loaned us their raffle ticket barrel, into which we placed the sold ticket stubs with each entrant's name.
Tickets at $5.00 each were available at most New Hamburg businesses in the weeks leading up to Canada Day - thank you to student volunteer Blythe Mackie, who sold tickets at Mackay's nofrills - plus on the big day at Scott Park. Sales were brisk July 1, both at our Scott Park sales tent - thanks to volunteer Cheryl Gordijk, our summer student Kristen Garrity, and Kristen's fiancé, Neil Coady - and also at the New Hamburg Community Centre during the Canada Day brunch, for which we're grateful to Board member Gillian Koch and student volunteer, Jack Koch.
Just before 4:00pm - when the race was due to be held - we enlisted the help of some young audience members to draw winning tickets from the barrel. Supervised by Board executive member Leslie Elkeer, along with Kristen Garrity, the winning numbers were announced live by M.C. Rob Esposito.
The prize winners were:
$1000 - Edward Desrosiers
$500 - Stacy Roth
$50 - Penny Dammeier, Lang Williams, Brenda Reid, Amber Krietsch, Deb Steckle, Vic Sciore, Peter Scheid, Nicole Stieber, Paul Snyder, James Clarke
