In response to the flooding many New Hamburg residents experienced on December 28, local organizations have banded together to create a New Hamburg Flood Relief Fund, intended to assist residents who lost essential items or whose homes suffered structural damage due to the floodwaters.
The Fund has been started by the New Hamburg Board of Trade, in cooperation with a number of local churches. Donations can be made directly through the New Hamburg branch of TD Canada Trust which is providing the administration at no cost or through local churches.
New Hamburg Board of Trade President Paul Knowles explained that, while many of the properties affected are located in flood plain areas, and are therefore susceptible to some degree of flooding, this was the worst flood since the mid-70s, with water levels far above normal amounts.
"We're not suggesting people are wise to put furnished TV rooms in their basements in these areas," he said, "but we do want to help people who are facing large bills to replace furnaces, water heaters, and other necessities."
Organizers stress that this is a time-limited fund, focused only on the current situation, because of its larger-than-usual impact on the community. They also recommend that property owners consult with Township of Wilmot officials concerning methods of safeguarding and lowering the risk to their properties in future situations.
Insurance experts note that damage caused by floodwaters on properties in high-risk areas are not covered by insurance.
The New Hamburg Flood Relief Fund will be administered by a committee representing the churches and the Board of Trade. Specific guidelines and limits for donations will be set before any requests for assistance are considered.
More information will be announced when the administrative committee is formed.
