Victims of the December 28 New Hamburg flood can now apply for financial assistance from the New Hamburg Flood Relief Committee.
Application forms are available to be picked up at the office of the New Hamburg Independent, 77 Peel Street, or downloaded at www.newhamburg.ca/flood.
Applications will be received until 5 p.m., February 4. They must be delivered to the office of the Independent by that time; no applications received after 5 p.m. Feb. 4 will be accepted.
Fundraising will continue through Feb. 28. Donors can contribute money to the New Hamburg Flood Relief Fund at the TD Canada Trust in New Hamburg, or through participating local churches.
The fund is a joint initiative of the New Hamburg Board of Trade and participating churches in New Hamburg.
The New Hamburg Lions and New Hamburg Lioness Clubs have contributed a total of $3,000 to the flood fund, and expressed the hope that other local service organizations would also participate. Board of Trade President Paul Knowles said, "On behalf of the Flood Fund committee, we are very grateful for such a significant donation from the Lions and Lioness Clubs, two organizations that already do so much for our community."
Both M.P.P. Leeanna Pendergast and M.P. Harold Albrecht are assisting with communication costs for the project. Local businesses are finding innovative ways to participate. For example, Meme's Café is making and selling "Guilt-free" cookies with all proceeds going to the flood fund; local insurance brokers Josslin Insurance and Zehr Insurance are cooperating to canvass the companies they represent for contributions; and some merchants are considering holding "flood fund" sales with a portion of proceeds going to the relief fund. |
