New Hamburg Board of Trade Executive Meeting
September 17, 2008
Present: Paul Knowles, Tim Bender, Nigel Gordijk, Ed Lemont, Tom Hinz, Lynne Mackie, Doug Brenneman, Dave Seyler.
Regrets: Larry Zehr, Terry McIntosh, Audrey Cook
1) Financial report: Lynne Mackie reported that the Board currently has $39,723 in the bank, with a few payables outstanding. The golf tournament netted $17,600. The Sidewalk Sale Days Food Booth netted approximately $1,200; overall, when all expenses including advertising were factored in, and all income including the food booth and 50/50 draw factored in, the event produced a slight profit. The Canada Day Duck Race netted $5,345.
2) Paul Knowles reported that preparations for the New Hamburg 150th celebration are well in hand; he commended a very hard-working event committee. He noted that enough volunteers have come forward for us to operate the food booth from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
3) Some time ago, the Board purchased a memorial sidewalk bench, which has been donated by Doris Traplin, mother of the late Mary Knowles. However, no plaque has ever been arranged, and so the bench has not been installed. It was moved by David Seyler, seconded by Lynne Mackie, that we proceed with obtaining the plaque. Carried.
4) The Board will sponsor a public all-candidates meeting, Thursday, October 9, at the Community Centre. It was moved by Tom Hinz, seconded by Nigel Gordijk, that we purchase an advertisements in the New Hamburg Independent, at a cost of up to $250, to promote this event and advertise the Board of Trade¹s involvement as sponsor. Carried.
5) Our speakers for the fall meetings: Sept. 24, Allan Sauder, from MEDA; Oct. 22, MPP Leeanna Pendergast; Nov. 26, Wilmot Mayor Wayne Roth.
6) Paul Knowles reported that contact is continuing between the Board and provincial officials in our effort to stop any bypass around New Hamburg. A petition will be presented to the Minister by our MPP, Leeanna Pendergast.
7) There was further discussion about the sad state of the downtown garbage receptacles placed by the Board of Trade. Paul Knowles reported that our original information, as noted in the August minutes, was incorrect; in fact, they were originally manufactured by Cress-Ridge, and that Kevin Cressman has informed us the liners can easily be replaced at low cost. Cress-Ridge has now ordered replacement liners, and will also examine the shells of the containers to determine which can be repaired.
8) David Seyler reported that the waterwheel will be stopped for the season in late October.
9) David Seyler distributed copies of a membership promotional package -- any new members joining the Board from now until the end of 2008 will receive that period of time, plus a full 2009 membership, for the price of the 2008 membership.
10) It was agreed that the executive will discuss the tabled issue of our relationship with the Baden Chamber of Commerce at the October executive meeting.
11) The executive commended Gaia's Gardens for their fine work in maintaining and even repairing the New Hamburg sign and garden.
12) Next executive meeting, Oct. 8, 6:30 p.m., at the Board of Trade office.
13) Doug Brenneman moved adjournment. |
